Japan has given the world so much – Akira, ninjas and the PlayStation, to name but three things – and what do we give them in return? A Hollywood Akira no one seems to want, innumerable crappy Internet memes about ninjas, and a month of PSN downtime. Come on, everyone except Japan. At least the poor country can once again take those PlayStations they invented online, after the PlayStation Network finally returns to Japan. That's only one of Sony's announcements over the last few days – they'll also be talking to Congress about the hack, and talking to you out there about what they're unveiling at E3.
Here's the (Japanese) video of Kazuo Hirai welcoming Japanese players back into the fold. Increased security measures – the delay was said to hinge partly on the Japanese government's continuing security concerns – include tighter encryption and warning systems within the network, the appointment of a Chief Information Officer within Sony Network Entertainment International to monitor security, and a hotline to help Japanese customers with returning online and their ongoing security concerns. Like others worldwide, Japanese users will also get free “Welcome Back” content.
In a further sign that the company is eager to cooperate with government, Sony have announced that they'll be sending SNEI's Tim Schaff to testify before Congress about concerns raised by the hack. The company had earlier responded to Congress' questions in writing, saying internal security concerns precluded their sending a representative to the hearings, but Schaff will be sent to address follow-up questions pertaining to the initial exchange.

If you're still reading despite being neither a Japanese resident nor a House representative, Sony has news for you too! The company will be streaming their E3 presentation in its entirety (a first for Sony), via the PlayStation Blog. The event kicks off at 5PM PST on June 6, and should last at least a couple hours, so dig in with plenty of whatever snacks best represent a mixture of contrition and the promise of a better handheld tomorrow. Possibly donuts?
