Hulu Plus on Xbox 360 confirmed to launch tomorrow (Xbox 360)

Earlier this week we reported that Hulu Plus was rumored to be launching on Xbox 360 this Friday, and today Microsoft confirmed that the streaming TV service will indeed be available for XBL members starting tomorrow. Additionally, every Xbox Live member (Gold or free) will have free access to Hulu Plus for a week, apparently sponsored by Jack Link’s Beef Jerky (seriously).

After the promotional period, a $7.99/month Hulu Plus subscription, and presumably an Xbox Live Gold account, will be required to continue using the service. And, if you have Kinect, Hulu Plus on 360 will feature full hand-wavey functionality (which makes "losing the remote" a much more serious issue than ever before).

Above: With Kinect, you can skip right through that pesky episode of Modern Family you accidentally started playing

I've seen plenty of debate as to whether or not the service is worth the price, especially as it still includes 'limited advertising,' but lemme tell you - the combination of Hulu Plus and Netflix offers just about everything I want and is far cheaper than my current cable bill (and I'm not even paying for HD!).

And yeah, I know some people like Modern Family. Few, however, should miss CBS' non-inclusion, unless you're still not tired of CSI reruns.

Peyton Hillis wins vote for Madden 12 cover (Madden NFL 12)

Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis has been chosen by online voters to grace the cover of EA's upcoming Madden 12. Hillis won the role after securing 66% of the 1,095,271 votes split between himself and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick.

Over 12 million online votes were counted for the entire tournament, which saw a representative from each NFL team compete in a tournament style competition. The final results were announced live last night on ESPN's SportsNight. Highlights of the broadcast include Hillis and Vick feigning interest in how the entire voting went down, and Vick's gentlemanly reaction to his significant defeat.

With only three seasons under his belt, Hillis is a talented but somewhat unlikely choice for Madden's poster man/child. The honor has traditionally been awarded to players with a little more history in the league, such as Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who shared the 2010 cover; and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who won a similar fan vote in 2011. It's likely Vick's dog fighting indictments back in 2007, and the fact he has already been featured on the Madden 2004 cover, played some part in giving Hillis the edge in the final round of EA's competition.

You can see Hillis in his winning pose when Madden 12 releases for all major consoles on August 30th.

Dragon Age II DLC includes new weapons and wardrobes for all classes (Dragon Age II)

BioWare has released its first batch of post-launch DLC for Dragon Age II. Available now wherever online goods are sold, Champions of Kirkwall can lay down a few bucks for item packs tailored to each of the three main classes.

The DLC is called the Dragon Age II Item Pack #1 and includes grab bags for Rogues, Mages and Warriors. Each contain 12 to 14 pieces of armor, weapons, rings and other useful goodies which can be equipped by both main characters and their followers. A quick scan of the item stats listed on the Dragon Age Wiki suggests the packs are geared towards mid-level characters, making them ideal for players on a second run-through, or those don't mind sacrificing a little skill for style.

Above: A new look for Rogues, Mages and Warriors (isn't that Dr.Doom in the middle?)

The packs can be bought individually or as a package deal. They currently run for 240 BioWare/Microsoft Points each (400 for all three) for Xbox 360 and PC/MAC, and $2.99 each ($4.99 for all) for PS3. For obvious reasons – or reasons that should be obvious to anyone who has tried logging in to PSN over the past week - Champions of the PS3 will have to wait until Sony gets its house in order to partake in the new content. In related news: screw you, hackers.

Elements of War (Review)

Elements of War takes place in a near-future America where weather-based weapons research has resulted (predictably) in disaster. The experiments have spawned a massive storm system that has destroyed the American infrastructure, left the country in chaos and altered the world’s weather patterns. As members of a remnant force of the American military, you and your allies must piece the country back together while discovering the secrets behind the disaster. Standing in your way are foes intent on claiming the weather weapons and the remnants of America for themselves.

Spotify CEO laughs off movie rumors

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek today refuted the rumors (reported by TechCrunch and others) that the Swedish streaming music service had negotiated a number of deals with major movie studios to stream their content. On his Twitter stream Ek said, “Soon I’ll be reading that Spotify is launching a space rocket.”

Spotify offers a number of subscriptions. Spotify Free comes with ads. The Unlimited subscription is ad-free and costs ?4.99 ($7.22) a month. Premium, which allows Spotify to be accessed on mobile and other non-PC devices, is priced a ?9.99 ($14.46) a month.

Possibly in anticipation of the long-awaited U.S. launch, Spotify recently announced changes to the service that reduce the number of listening hours available per month to free users and the number of times that tracks can be played.

On a side note, I recently asked another Swedish music startup founder, Alexander Ljung of Soundcloud, why so many music startups come out of the country. “There’s been a lot of quite successful music artists from Sweden. That comes partly from the fact that there’s a lot of music education in school,” he told me. “It’s free to learn instruments. Almost everybody I knew was learning at least one instrument. And then it’s dark 6 months of the year.?

Spotify is based in Sweden and has 10 million users around the world (1 million of which are paying subscribers), mainly in Europe. The company has received funding of $120 million and is valued at around $1 billion.

Rhythm Heaven for Wii ditches waggle, sticks with buttons (Rhythm Heaven Wii)

When Nintendo announced that they would continue their cult favorite Rhythm Heaven series on Wii, fans were concerned that the game's ultra-precise rhythm-based gameplay would be sullied by imprecise motion controls, but it turns out all the worry was over nothing. Satoru Iwata announced that Rhythm Heaven on Wii would stick to button controls only, “I tried out a near-final version of the game, and felt that this (version), playable with a TV monitor, never loses the uniqueness of the original… (It) is intentionally designed to be played only with buttons.”

The Rhythm Heaven series began on the Game Boy Advance in 2007. Due to Nintendo of America's focus on the DS at the time, it never made its way to America officially, but became an import favorite. The series made its American debut with Rhythm Heaven for the DS in 2009 (called Rhythm Heaven Gold in Japan). Some fans of the original felt that the stylus input on the DS version was a poor replacement for the buttons of the GBA and arcade versions, so the upcoming Wii version might be a welcome return to form for those fans.

Rhythm Heaven is set for release in Japan this summer. No western release date has been given, but perhaps we'll hear something at E3.

Dead or Alive Dimensions: An interview with Team Ninja's Yosuke Hayashi (Dead or Alive Dimensions)

It’s been a surprisingly long time since the last Dead or Alive fighting game release – Dead or Alive 4 came out way back in 2005, around the launch window of the Xbox 360. We’ve had some spin-offs and a very bizarre film adaptation in the meantime, but DoA’s core competency of intense one-on-one 3D fighting has been, well, dead for a while now. But Team Ninja’s not content to let one of its crown jewels collect dust, and now Dead or Alive is alive and kicking again, making a comeback in the form of DoA Dimensions on the 3DS. We sat down with Team Ninja’s Yosuke Hayashi to discuss all matter of DoA related subjects, ranging from the current fighting game landscape to the franchise’s future as a post-merger Tecmo-Koei property.

Sony: Credit card numbers were encrypted, PSN restored 'when we are confident the network is secure' (PlayStation 3)

On Tuesday, Sony revealed that the personal information of PSN account holders, possibly even including credit card numbers, was compromised by an illegal intrusion to the network. Sr. Communication Director Patrick Seybold's latest post regarding the disaster (shit storm, cluster shart, etc.) features a substantial Q&A which addresses many of the concerns voiced after the previous announcement.

In the post, Seybold states that all credit card information stored by Sony is encrypted, and that "there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken." Additionally, even if credit card data was retrieved, Seybold states that Sony did not store credit card security codes (CVC numbers).

In regards to Sony's current plans, it is currently "working closely with a recognized technology security firm and law enforcement in order to find those responsible for this criminal act no matter where in the world they might be located," and still plans to have "some services" back online within a week from yesterday.

The full Q&A is on the PlayStation Blog.

Game fundings and acquisitions rise 130 percent to $1.89B in 2010

Video game acquisitions and funding deals rose 130 percent to $1.89 billion in 2010, up from $819 million in 2009, according to market researcher IHS Screen Digest.

The number of fundings and acquisition deals combined was 210 during last year, up 36 percent from a year earlier, thanks to the disruption in the game business caused by the growth of online and social networking games. Our own count found that game fundings hit $1.05 billion raised across 91 deals in 2010, up 58 percent from $663.1 million across 115 deals a year earlier.

There were 123 fundings and 87 acquisitions during the year, IHS Screen Digest said. There were 20 to 24 acquisitions every quarter, double the rate of the year earlier.

The numbers cover funding and acquisitions activity in all areas of games except mobile. Oddly enough, that’s the most active area of the game business today, and Screen Digest says it tracks that market separately.

?Two key trends fueled the robust pace of funding and acquisitions in gaming during 2010,? said Steve Bailey, games analyst at IHS. ?First, it was driven by burgeoning activity in the fast-evolving sphere of online gaming, with particular emphasis on social network gaming. Second, movement in funding and acquisitions also has ramped up between Western markets and entities in Asia, centered likewise on the growth to be found in various aspects of online gaming.”

Companies in all regions are starting to go global, raising the likelihood of international deals. The total declared value of funding deals in social network games alone rose 300 percent in 2010.

The biggest funding event was when Chinese online gaming giant Tencent invested $300 million in Russia’s Digital Sky Technologies, which itself has invested in social game companies such as Zynga. Zynga raised $147 million from Japanese investor Softbank. But we noted the biggest funding of the year was Providence Equity Partners investing $150 million in ZeniMax, which acquired id Software, whose upcoming game Rage is pictured at top.

PopCap Games and Make-A-Wish Foundation help 9-year-old produce iOS game (iPad)

The Make-A-Wish Foundation and PopCap Games have completed their mission to fulfill a 9-year-old boy's wish to design, develop and release his own iOS game. How does this heartwarming story fit in to our Week of Hate, you may ask? It doesn't. Unless you hate seeing children given the opportunity to realize their dreams.

The inspiring kid in question is Owain Weinert, an imaginative young gamer diagnosed with pre-B Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, who asked the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help him create and distribute his very own game. Always obliging, Make-A-Wish made arrangements to have Weinert work with developers at PopCap Games on the creation of a futuristic real-time strategy game called Allied Star Police. The project took several weeks and included multiple visits by Weinert to the PopCap Games studio. Also, pizza. Lots of pizza.

PopCap Games hosted a launch party for Allied Star Police on Wednesday night (video here), during which they presented Weinert with an iPad preloaded with the finished product. The studio is planning to upload the game to the App Store shortly, and seeing as it'll likely be free, if you don't download this game I will hate you. Ok, not hate hate, but there will be mild disappointment.

Verizon?s big location tracking awareness campaign: warning stickers on phones

So it’s come to this: Verizon says it will be adding Surgeon General-style warnings on its phones to make users aware that the carrier will be tracking their location, Forbes reports.

The move comes as a response to carrier inquiries from Congressman Joe Barton and Ed Markey, who were following up on a New York Times article that revealed the dramatic extent smartphones are tracking consumers.

In letters made public by the Congressman today, Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint all admit to tracking user data, but point out that they’re required to do so by federal law since police rely on that data for investigative purposes.

All of the carriers say they don’t share or sell the location information otherwise. Verizon says that it keeps the user data for seven years, AT&T says between several days and five years, Sprint says for three years and T-Mobile was unclear about how long it holds the data.

Verizon is the only carrier so far to take any further steps to make users aware of location tracking. I suspect that the other carriers will feel pressured to do so, as it’s an easy way to demonstrate that they care about consumr privacy concerns.

Download of the Week - Dead Rising 2: Case Zero's price slashed to 200MS (Dead Rising 2)

Platform: 360 | Publisher: Capcom | Developer: Blue Castle | Price: 200MS | Size: 824.75MB

We were going to laud some quality PS3 titles here this week, but ummm, errr, something happened to the PlayStation Network. Not quite sure what as we can't find any news about it anywhere. Anyways, the selection would've had to be pretty strong to go up against Dead Rising 2: Case Zero, which has been slashed to half price on Xbox Marketplace this week.

Even though the brilliant Dead Rising 2 has been out for a bit, this taster of Chuck Greene's journey to Fortune City - the location of DR2 is both a perfect appetiser to the big action and also a great filler for those looking for more zombie skulls to crack after completing the main game.

iPhone review of the day: Resident Evil Mercenaries VS is exactly what it sounds like (Resident Evil Mercenaries VS)

On iPhone
Game:
Resident Evil Mercenaries VS
Price: $2.99
Size: 25.9 MB
Get it now on iTunes: US / UK

Cloned from the Mercenaries mode in the console versions of Resident Evil 5, the iphone offering Resident Evil Mercenaries Vs might be intended as a stopgap promotional maneuver to satisfy fans until Mercenaries 3D arrives on 3DS in June. But it's good enough to be worthwhile on its own. It's essentially a big deathmatch mode done up with Resident Evil's engine - and though it's a little light on selectable characters and levels - there's still plenty of fun to be had, especially if you've got a few friends with iPhones and the app as well.

Multiplayer is clearly the emphasis here, though CPU opponents can ably step in for human players if you’re alone, but in the mood for some team-based and free-for-all rounds. The goal, of course, is to simply sink your opponents as many times as possible within the time limit -- though the twist is slow-moving and chainsaw-toting zombies interfere with the mission. Why the human forces are running around killing one another is unclear, so it most likely is classified. Who knows? This was the series that unironically introduced the phrase "Jill sandwich" to the lexicon, so it's probably best not to ask too many questions.

Combat is clunky in that intentionally characteristic Resident Evil fashion, with shooting or stabbing being completely impossible while walking. The upshot is your opponents have this handicap as well, and it actually makes the roving zombies welcome visitors to a match, because they can inadvertently help you double-team someone you've cornered. There's still a bit of a learning curve with the touch screen, but that same lurching creepiness inherent to the series shines through in these bite-sized matches perfectly.

Rumor: Civilization dev's next game is an Unreal powered strategy game (Sid Meier's Civilization V)

Civilization maker Firaxis has been quiet since the release of Civilization V last year, but new info revealed through resumes and LinkedIn profiles of current and former studio employees reveals info about the studios next game, and past canceled projects.

The LinkedIn profile of former level engineer Chris Doyle along with the resume of ex-Firaxis game programmer Will Miller reference a multiplatform title powered by Unreal Engine 3. Miller's resume says that the title began development in 2007, and calls in a AAA strategy game for the PC, 360, and PS3. A sequel to Civilization Revolution perhaps? Short answer: Possibly but not likely.

According to the resume (since taken down) of David Jones, current character artist, at Firaxis, a sequel to Civilization Revolution was in development in 2008 for the PC, 360, and PS3 in 2008. Is the game mentioned in Miller's resume Civilization Revolution 2? Civilization Revolution was announced in 2007 and released in June of 2008. It's possible that early work began on a sequel in late 2008, but given how much of an experiment Civ Rev was, Firaxis would have had to hold an amazing amount of faith in the project over half-a-year before its release. While this mystery game may be Civ Rev 2, it's likely something else. The only other title currently known to be in development at Firaxis is the Facebook game, Civilization World.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Eight hours with the Bounty Hunter (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

Above: We played The Old Republic for eight hours! Find out how a Star Wars MMO with the BioWare treatment plays inside When Star Wars: The Old Republic was first announced, we had nightmarish visions of roughly textured Jedi hopping down long roads and naked dancing on top of the town's holocon email box. It was then, that we decided we needed to roll a character to combat the masses, someone with the mettle and might to stop the horde of blue saber-wielding do-gooders out to make the galaxy a better place. We needed a bounty hunter – and last week we got one for eight hours. Find out what it's like to level up a bounty hunter from level 1 to 9 inside...
