Music Improvisation Guide Question

I was looking for information on making music in LOTRO and stumbled on this article in the Lorebook:

http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Mecha...visation_Guide

While this is a very cool article it says to map C#5 through A#5 on keys Y through P. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but the Options don't give me the option of mapping C#5 through A#5 (the rest of the keys are mappable).

Instead I mapped C#2 through A#2 on keys Z through B, C#3 through A#3 on keys H through ";", and C#4 through A#4 on keys Y through P.

Is that how I should do it, or am I missing some piece of the puzzle?

Total Immersion?s augmented reality makes loyal fans out of tweens

This article is part of a series of posts where we write about DEMO alumni and news of their progress. Total Immersion launched at DEMO in 2004 and returned to launch a separate product in 2007. Check out their 2007 video here and more at DEMO.

Crowdsourcing has taken a turn for the tweens with MyFlipbook, a Facebook application from augmented reality company Total Immersion. The app was launched this week by Hollywood Records in support of recording artist Selena Gomez’s new album.

To Total Immersion, MyFlipbook provides a unique outlet for users to have customizable experiences with their technology and social media. There?s a lot more here, though. The broad reach of social media in tandem with personalized interactions can develop sincere brand loyalty.

In order to be a part of your own music video, Total Immersion?s technology provides a randomly selected word for the user to hold up in a photo of themselves. The photo is then spliced in with other crowdsourced photos taken by your friends and timed with the words to Gomez?s song, ?Who Says?.

Around 9:30am PT yesterday, Gomez announced MyFlipbook on her Facebook fan page. Since then, the post has received 9,440 likes and 2,123 comments. To give this perspective, most of her posts receive this kind of attention. But with hundreds of people already participating in the MyFlipbooks found on YouTube, it shows fans are listening and acting.

This isn?t Total Immersion?s first go with the tween demographic. In 2010, the company paired up with the Disney popstar to create My Interview with Selena Gomez. This time, Total Immersion provided questions for fans to answer and then timed them with Gomez?s pre-recorded answers in a ?web cam interview? scenario.

Engaging consumers in a customizable way yields rich interactions and fosters repeat user relationships. Social media in general has s dynamic engagement that makes people feel unique and part of the conversation. Saying Twitter and Facebook simply have repeat users is a major understatement, which is why Total Immersion is targeting social media for their latest augmented reality initiatives.

?Total Immersion understands the importance and influence of social networks on individuals? lives, and we have the ability to create dynamic, unique and customized experiences for our customers based on those networks,? said Bruno Uzzan, chief executive of Total Immersion.

Total Immersion is best known for their augmented reality software, D?Fusion, which integrates 3D imaging in real time onto a live video stream. The company raised $5.5 million in funding last March to expand the software and its global operations.

Mr. Inkjet hands-on preview (Mr. Inkjet)

The PlayStation Vita is brimming with potential and it’s going to take gamers a bit to understand just how everything works. Case in point: Mr. Inkjet, a quirky puzzle game that has you manipulating a paper-doll through various obstacles using the rear touch panel.

Our demo started with us taking a picture to use as our avatar. Because there weren’t a ton of viable subjects around the Sony booth, we used the art book Sony had on hand. But, even that proved only half-useful because we couldn’t manage lining up the target area with the torso of the drawing we picked.

What surprised us was how clear and crisp the image was from the rear-facing camera. We’ve become accustomed to the 3DS’s blurry images, so the quality caught us off guard.

The level we played had us controlling all four limbs of our avatar using four points of contact with the rear touch panel. Pulling our hands and arms in toward our trunk to avoid lasers and other obstacles as we scrolled upward was simple and intuitive, but the level of sensitivity meant we weren’t always successful at keeping our extremities tucked in.

We weren’t sure exactly where the safe zone was for us to touch, and we wound up having six fingers on the back at first. It didn’t hinder our performance, but had we been intimately acquainted with the Vita hardware our time would have been better spent. We liked what we saw and hopefully it forces players into using the hardware in some new ways with each mission.

Once dead Hellgate: London online game returns as free-to-play

Hellgate: London, an online game developed by former members of Blizzard Entertainment that was shut down in 2009, has returned from the dead and is now free-to-play.

T3Fun will now operate the game now that the original studio is defunct. Many members of the team behind Diablo, a smash-hit online game, left Blizzard Entertainment to found Flagship Studios and begin work on Hellgate: London. The game originally came out in 2007, but the development studio filed for bankruptcy shortly after that. The game ran on a subscription-based model that cost players $10 a month, with an option to buy a lifetime subscription for $150.

Hellgate: London still had a “free” element to the game, but players that didn’t by a subscription were severely weakened when compared to premium players. Premium players had access to player-versus-player content and could bypass lines to get into servers and begin playing the game. Free players could carry fewer items and could not create player communities like guilds, for example

It was another online subscription-based game that became a casualty to supergiant online game World of Warcraft, which now has around 11.4 million users. World of Warcraft came out in 2005 and quickly became the most popular online game. The game cost players around $12 a month, making it hard to justify paying for a second game’s monthly subscription.

Here?s how the free-to-play, or ?freemium?, model works: players are able to play online games with persistent worlds like Lord of the Rings Online for free but must pay for additional perks like armor or becoming more powerful at a quicker pace.

Other online games have had a lot of success converting from a subscription-based model to a free-to-play model. Revenue from Turbine?s Lord of the Rings Onlinedoubled and its player base increased by 400 percentin the month after it went free to play last fall. Revenue for the company?s first experiment in going free-to-play, Dungeons and Dragons Online, jumped byabout 500 percentafter the shift.

Hellgate: London was a first-person shooter (FPS) online game that featured several elements from games like Diablo. It includes randomly-generated dungeons, monsters and loot that are designed to add a lot of chance to the game and encourage players to continue playing. It also features role-playing game elements like leveling up to become more powerful.

360 vs PS3: Xbox 360 sales for ‘online-capable’ games 40% higher than PlayStation 3 sales (Xbox 360)

Videogames are great and all, but you know what's really great? Charts! Sometimes a good, solid chart is all you need to justify the assumptions you might be harboring. Speaking of charts, the NPD Group just released a slew of the analyst-on-the-go's favorite medium for displaying information, these ones handily pertaining to the videogame industry. Among other things, they reveal that Xbox 360 sales figures for online-capable games are 40% higher than sales for the PlayStation 3.

Since 2006, the Xbox 360 has been the system of choice for online games. In fairness to Sony, of course, the PlayStation 3 isn't the company's only online platform, which is also the case for Nintendo, whose poor Wii showing would doubtless look a little less embarrassing if you factored in titles purchased from the DS' online service.

Above: What does it all mean? When it comes to online multiplayer games, like CoD or Street Fighter IV, more people purchase the 360 version

The charts also show steady growth for Microsoft's MS Points retail cards soaring sky-high while the Sony and Nintendo equivalents founder in the shallows. Again, this doesn't tell the whole story; Sony and Nintendo have long focused on delivering more free online content than Microsoft. Still, it’s an impressive lead on Microsoft’s part. Also released were reports suggesting that “digital gamers” accounted for playtime and game purchases in amounts comparable to “core gamers” – a division that, without concrete definitions or figures for backup, has to be considered somewhat useless in its ambiguity.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel hands-on multiplayer preview – dealers vs cops (Call of Juarez: The Cartel)

Drugs are a violent business, and not just for those actively doing the crimes. Sure, drug dealers have to deal with a not-so-ideal customer base, but that's not all they have to deal with. Sometimes, the authorities get involved, and that's when things start to really get ugly. It becomes a desperate struggle to hold on to as much contraband as possible while still holding onto their lives. And that bad situation is exactly where Call of Juarez: The Cartel's objective mode drops you.

In the map we played, it was our team's goal to break into a warehouse where a bunch of confiscated cocaine was being stashed by the opposing team, the cops. We had to bust down the door of the shipping crate that they were hiding the stuff in (with our handy supply of C4, of course), grab the loot, and carry it back to our van, which was lying in wait to carry us back to the hideout. As is typical with objective-based shooters, the battle immediately became a struggle for important control points, culminating in several intense gunfights over the entry points to the crate, the way out the door, and the backside of the van.

Getting the drugs to the van was only half the battle though. Next, it was time to get those drugs back to the cartel's base of operations, several blocks down the street. Seamlessly, the action switched to a vehicle-based situation with drug runners flanking a slow-moving van down the street while the opposing police forces streamed from spawn points to try to blow out the wheels, kill the driver, or anything else that would get the van to stop moving closer to the destination. Of all the points in the demo, this was probably our favorite. The chaos that ensues by a battlefield that slowly moves through the map is something that not a lot of multiplayer experiences have going right now, and it's great.

Finally, it was time to take care of that damn snitch that lost us the drugs in the first place. Holed up in a safe house and protected by the police, the traitor is seriously tough to get to. Fortunately, there's a partner system that will help players willing to stick together to get through those particularly difficult moments. Hanging out by your buddy will afford you one of several different advantages against the enemies (ours was the ability to do a lot more damage at the cost of taking a little more ourselves), as well as the capability to revive your partner if they were to ever fall to enemy gunfire. When you need that final little boost to get up the stairs, past the waiting guards, and to the safe room where the objective is waiting to be slain, you better grab a friend.

Of course, after committing such a heinous crime, we had to hide the evidence. And what better way to do so than by burning the place down? Our final objective, we had to fill up gas cans and torch the place, ensuring our clean escape from our various crimes. After about half an hour spent in this single mission alone, we were impressed by the huge amount of variety each mission promises. If each other mission was as long and in-depth as the one we played, it'll be sure to keep players interested for a long while.

With a maximum of twelve players per match (six on each side), the surprisingly huge maps (18 in total) always felt crowded, even when the objectives switched to more mobile situations. It's really interesting to see a game taking tried and true modes in multiplayer, and applying them on a grander scale, adding in a sort of narrative to the situation. It definitely feels like a new experience so far, and we're excited to give more of these types of missions a shot.

Sony CEO asked to resign at annual shareholders meeting (PlayStation 3)

Tensions were high at Sony’s 94th annual shareholders meeting in Tokyo today. With 8,360 attendees, today’s meeting was the most attended shareholders meeting for the company – and investors were not pleased. During a Q&A session Sony Corporation CEO Howard Stringer was asked to step down by one shareholder, reports Impress Watch. Sony Corporation’s stock value has steadily declined since March this year – and concerns regarding the loss of consumer trust were raised.

In his defense, Stringer pointed to the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan and ensured investors that Sony is working on improving its information management system. Stringer also pointed out that 90% of PSN users have returned since the network was brought down after a cyber-attack compromised personal information for approximately 100 million customers, suggesting that the consumer trust is still there.

One shareholder suggested that management might be to blame for the attacks against Sony, perhaps referring to the company’s response to PlayStation modder George ‘GeoHot’ Hotz, which led to the hacktivist collective Anonymous declaring war on Sony.

Above: Stringer pointed to the Japan earthquake and tsunami in March when asked about the decline in value of Sony Corporation stock

Sony's Kaz Hirai defended the company's decisions, claiming that Sony was only trying to protect its intellectual property. According to Hirai, this is something that wasn’t done just for the good of Sony, but for third-party publishers, developers, and retailers as well.

A recent class action lawsuit filed against Sony, revealed that Sony had fired a team of network security experts just two weeks before the PSN security breach – and alleges that the company was already aware of security problems before the April outage.

Petition to Remove Store-Only relics or make them attainable in-game

Dear lotro community,

This thread may be a bit late but I haven't found a good thread discussing this. Turbine kept telling us that the Store Items would not give a benefit over other players and if they did include stats buying them would only be for your convenience (you were able to get the item in-game). I must say that the adding of these relics to the store-only truly makes me sick. In my oppinion it shows great disrespect to the community. If we as a community accept this change we will find raid armour in the store soon along with a better version of Baingrist.

I urge Turbine to remove these items as quickly as possible (next patch) from the store or add them to the melding panel and ask the community if they agree with me to reply in this thread.

These are the relics I am talking about;
True Setting of Continuance
+250 Morale, +126 in-combat Power Regen, and +1300 Incoming Healing

True Gem of the King Under the Mountain
+25 Vitality, +260 Block/Parry/Evade, and +126 in-Combat Morale Regen

True Rune of the Dark Watch
+17 to all stats (Might, Agility, Vitality, Will and Fate).

Wii and DS aren't dead yet: 12 upcoming games keeping the systems alive (Rhythm Heaven Wii)

Obviously Nintendo’s top priorities at E3 2011 were to introduce the Wii U to players and to showcase future 3DS software, leaving little time for more news other than detailing Zelda’s 25th anniversary. A casual observer might have been led to believe that the DS and Wii are now dead and buried, but that’s far from the case. At Nintendo’s E3 booth the company had tons of space devoted to games that were barely hinted at during the press conference.

After looking at what very well could be the last DS and Wii games Nintendo will ever have playable at E3, it dawned on us that many games weren’t getting all the exposure they could. Sure, none of the releases looked on the level of a AAA title like Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, but most deserved a second glance. Read on to see how gaming giants like Wii and DS will spend their final days.

The silly, silly faces of LA Noire (L.A. Noire)

By now, most of you are well aware of the impressive facial technology in LA Noire. Painstaking motion capture, a zillion points of articulation… all that. But as breathtaking as they are to see in action, those hyper-accurate expressions leave the characters in LA Noire susceptible to the same awkwardness that’s been ruining family photo albums since the inception of the camera. Observe:

Here’s some inside baseball. We’ve spent the better part of last month capturing every nook and cranny of 1940’s Los Angeles. Our Achievements Guide, our Five Star and Newspapers Guideour Film Reels and Landmarks Guideour Vehicles Guide – I trust you’ve seen them? But before we our LA Noire footage heads into the great digital beyond, we figured we’d have a little more fun at the expense of one of our favorite games of 2011 (so far.)

LivingSocial deals minor blow to Groupon?s market share

Groupon, LivingSocialMore bad news for Groupon, the group-coupon company heading for an IPO. Its share of the group-buying market declined in May, according to the latest report from Yipit, a site that aggregates deals from 482 sites.

Yipit’s report tracked 17,958 discounts offered in May across 30 North American cities including Miami, Atlanta, New York, Dallas, Denver and Toronto. Groupon had 48 percent of the group-buying market in May – down four percentage points from the previous month.

Groupon’s biggest competitor, LivingSocial, saw its market share rise four percentage points from the previous month to 24 percent in May. Trailing the two largest group-deal sites in May were TravelZoo, BuyWithMe and Gilt City, according to the report.

Both Groupon and LivingSocial are making less money per deal than in previous months as group deals proliferate on the web,David Sinsky, Yipit Data Product Manager, told Bloomberg. But while both sites may be making less money per deal, the number of deals sold has increased, which has boosted revenue.

Chicago-based Groupon filed a $750 million initial public offering earlier this month despite heavy criticism about the company’s long-term sustainability. The company has consistently lost money every quarter since launching in 2009 except for the first quarter of 2010, when it brought in an $8 million profit.

One reason for Groupon’s inability to generate a profit could be due to the company’s rapid rate of growth. At roughly half the size of Groupon, LivingSocial doesn’t have that problem.

If LivingSocial can turn a profit despite its smaller size, it may become the more successful group deals company by default.

PSN services still offline (in Japan) (PlayStation 3)

Okay, admit it: when the PlayStation owners among you read “PSN” and “offline,” you freaked out a little bit. All the anguish and paranoia that you thought had been buried beneath a pile of conciliatory gestures came rushing back, and for a moment it was April all over again. Well, be cool hotshot. Your PSN is most likely just fine. Unless you're in Japan, in which case some services still remain offline – and you've been told nothing new for two weeks. At least Sony has finally reached out to its Japanese audience to tell them... nothing new.

While there's arguably less of a discussion surrounding online privacy in Japan, the country definitely isn't lax in its requirements for companies to keep their customers' information secure. Sony may be finding out just how strict these requirements can be. The company’s latest statement to customers doesn't name names, but states that continued delays in restoring services, like PlayStation Store, PSN account management, and Qriocity, are the result of continued negotiations with unspecified “parties.” Recently, Japanese credit card companies and Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry have asked Sony to be more forthcoming in sharing information pertaining to the initial breach and their handling of the resultant security issues.

Neither does the statement give any concrete indication of when these services will be returned to customers. Are you a Japanese PSN user? How are you coping? Maybe we can, I dunno, play the Catherine demo and email you a video of it or something?
