Reggie Fils-Aime: Two reasons why you didn’t buy a 3DS and what Nintendo’s going to do about it (Nintendo 3DS)

Sales for the Nintendo 3DS have been slower than expected – and Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime says he knows why. The system’s weak launch lineup lacked any of the AAA titles Nintendo is known for, with casual pet sim Nintendogs + Cats and Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars topping charts. The lack of any networked features at launch was also an embarrassment.

Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime addressed the slow sales for the Nintendo 3DS. “When we launched, we had a fantastic day one and a very strong week one,” said Fils-Aime. “But when we started talking to consumers who were aware or interested, but hadn’t yet bought, they told us two things: first, I need a big Nintendo franchise for our purchase. The second thing was I need the network to be up. I need the connected experiences to be there.”

Conveniently, these happen to be the two problems addressed by this month's release of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and the recent system update, leading Fils-Aime to expect a solid groundswell of support for a system that, he insists, wasn't prematurely launched.

The solution: More AAA titles for Nintendo fans, like Super Mario 3D and Kid Icarus

With the launch of Ocarina of Time 3D, followed by what Fils-Aime calls “a steady drumbeat” of first-party titles including Super Mario 3D and Kid Icarus: Uprising, Nintendo hopes to rectify the system’s lack of solid titles. Recent updates, which have added online store capability and enabled the browser that came packed into the console, address the network issue. While Fils-Aime grants that “we thought there would have been a tighter gap between launch and the first network update,” he says the company should be “back with strong momentum on the 3DS.”

Do you share this optimism? If you’ve been holding out for a Nintendo 3DS, does news of big incoming titles have you reconsidering a purchase?
