Just two weeks prior to the PlayStation Network security breach, Sony fired a team of network security experts. The information comes from a recent class action lawsuit, which alleges that the company was already aware of security problems, citing smaller security breaches before the PSN was brought down on April 20 after personal information from approximately 100 million PSN accounts were compromised by a cyber attack.
“Sony sought to cut its costs at the expense of its customers by terminating a significant number of employees immediately prior to the security breach, including personnel responsible for maintaining the security of the network,” read the complaint.
Citing a “confidential witness,” the lawsuit also contends that Sony “spent lavishly,” paying millions to protect sensitive company data after the initial attack, but did not offer PSN users the same protections.
The suit was filed by plaintiffs Felix Cortorreal, Jacques Daoid Jr. and Jimmy Cortorreal, who are seeking actual damages in the amount paid for the equipment and network in addition to other forms of relief, reports Gamasutra.
