LucasArts boss believes studio has room to improve (Star Wars: The Old Republic)

If you were underwhelmed with LucasArts's latest offerings - namely, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II - you can take comfort in knowing at least one person in the studio feels your pain. In a recent interview with MCV, company boss Paul Meegan admitted LucasArts has been performing just shy of its true potential over the last few years, and wants to see the studio to return to its former glory.

“In recent years, LucasArts hasn’t always done a good job of making games. We should be making games that define our medium, that are competitive with the best of our industry, but we’re not. That has to change,” said Meegan, who took over as head honcho one year ago.

Meegan did not offer any opinions as to why LucasArts's output  has allegedly slipped in the last few years, only that it has nothing to do with the brands or the game makers themselves, insisting, “Lucasfilm has some of the most beloved and powerful brands in entertainment, we have a loyal community of fans, and talented people in every discipline. We’re surrounded by staggeringly bright and creative people at the top of their games.”

While LucasArts has no involvement with the next two high-profile Star Wars titles, Star Wars Kinect (Terminal Reality) and The Old Republic (BioWare), Meegan said the cult franchise remains a key focus for the studio going forward, adding, “Our priority is to create authentic, immersive, high quality Star Wars games.”

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II may not have redefined the genre, but it would be a stretch to say it was an out-and-out disappointment. It's possible Meegan is being a touch too critical, but his comments are a refreshing change of pace from the standard “our game will be the greatest gift to humanity”-esque developer sound bites we typically run across on the inter-tubes. What do you think? Is LucasArts performing up to snuff, or is there room for improvement?
