Google Maps adds helpful My Places feature

My PlacesGoogle on Wednesday announced it had added a handy new feature called My Places to its widely popular Google Maps application.

My Places helps visitors keep track of important locations by adding a new tab in the Google Maps toolbar. It will replace the My Maps tab and will let the user view his or her saved maps, starred locations, or rated places, all in a timeline of recent activity. To use My Places, you have to be signed in with a Google account.

Google Maps has been around since 2005, so it’s nice to see constant revisions and improvements to the product. Maps is one of only a handful of Web apps that I use nearly every day, so I appreciate it when Google makes it easier to use or more intuitive.

After a quick spin with My Places, I’m pleased. I didn’t use starred locations as much as I could have because I didn’t have any easy way to put them together in one spot. During my test, My Places pulled up a list of 20 locations I had starred more than a year ago, and I can imagine using it often to pull my apartment or favorite restaurants when I’m searching for directions.
