Portal 2 released early. On PC, at least. Console game vendors still need to get with the programme (Portal 2)

Yep, the hard efforts of the world's potato-buying Steam users (and by "hard work", I mean "playing a shit-ton of brilliant indie games") have paid off. With the Portal 2 ARG complete (or at least the first part of it), Portal 2 has been released on Steam and is available for download right now (you'd better have it ticking down behind this window).

The console versions? Hmmm. You might still have to wait for them. Unless you're Australian.

The Australian wing of the Game chain, you see, have confirmed that they've broken the street date in line with the PC release. "Yay!" we thought. "Bricks and mortar retail that is actually in tune with what us cool kids at the internet forefront of gaming are actually doing" But then we called our local, UK-based branch of Game. The man at the shop replied to our questionings of a similarly early release with a blunt denial and a vague air of confusion, and refused to sell us a copy before Thursday. C'mon, man in Game. It's almost as if you've never heard of potato-based ARGs.

Looks like it's all down to individual retailer discretion on this one. There could be some retail angst in regards to EA publishing the console versions, where Valve is obviously publishing the PC version itself, but really, c'mon guys. The game is out. This is one situation where the phrase "F*ck it" really does apply, regardless of other considerations.

Getting the console version? Start ringing around and let us know if you have any luck getting a copy.
