Many people questioned how much of a commercial success the 3DS would be with no other Nintendo handheld ever being more expensive, but at least in the UK, it's already breaking sales records.
Amazon.co.uk has just revealed the 3DS has received more pre-orders than any other video game system in the online retailer's history. The site director of video games for the UK Chris Poad said, "It's unusual for a handheld console to attract this amount of excitement in the run up to launch, such high levels of interest are normally reserved for the play-at-home hardware like the ground-breaking Nintendo Wii and last year’s Microsoft Kinect."
The 3DS will sell for £187 when it goes on sale in the UK on March 25. That is the equivalent of $301. Over here in the US, the device will hit stores two days later, March 27, for $250.
The device has already proven its worth as a sales juggernaut in Japan, moving hundreds of thousands of units in its first few days on the market.
Curious about which system the 3DS toppled in order the become the new Amazon UK record holder? The PS3. Here's the new top five list of the site's most pre-ordered gaming hardware:
1. Nintendo 3DS
2. PlayStation 3
3. Nintendo Wii
4. Microsoft Kinect
5. PlayStation Move
