Utah-based startup incubator BoomStartup announced the 10 companies it has selected to participate in its second annual class. The three-month summer program gives promising new tech companies a shot at early additional funding and attention from potential investors on the hunt for the next hot concepts.
The companies in the Class of 2011 are ChampionVillage, CircleFive, Explorer.io, FaceTags, Golf Compete, Jumbas, OER Glue, PromoKube, Proz and VuTherapy.
BoomStartup is a mentorship-driven seed accelerator for web, mobile and software startups and is a founding TechStars Network Member. The training program lasts from May to August, and BoomStartup invests about $15,000 for a 6 percent stake in each company.
The system is modeled on TechStars, the Boulder-based program that recently opened an office in New York City.
?After coming off a successful first year in 2010, we return back, in our second year, with even a stronger group of 10 companies. We were surprised at the number of applicants we received this year from outside the country and across the nation.? said Robb Kunz, co-managing partner of BoomStartup.
?This demonstrates the success that mentorship-driven accelerators are creating, regardless of their geographic location,? added Kunz. ?These companies continue to surprise us with their innovative technologies and solutions. It was a tough year to only select 10 companies?.
Kunz said that BoomStartup?s approach is unique because it matches up each startup with a specific investor-mentor, who they work with for the entire program. Those mentors include Omniture cofounder John Pestana.
The companies selected offer a wide swathe of services:
–ChampionVillage is an online gaming community for kids that combines fitness with ?mom-friendly? security features.
–CircleFive is a social media platform that will allow direct-to-home sales and service companies to “check in” at customers’ homes and encourage testimonials from customers as well as referrals.
–Explorer.io is a social utility that allows people to search, add, and share outdoor locations for various activities such as hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, and climbing.
–FaceTags maps and recognizes faces programmatically and then uses that image as a digital link between content and other mobile devices.
–Golf Compete is a new marketplace that helps golf courses unload their amenities and helps users find discounted tee times and other perks.
–OER Glue attempts to outline the best way to find open licensed content that can be used for teaching.
–Jumbas provides consumers a one-stop-shop for their city’s top daily deals.
–PromoKube is a mobile application that allows consumers to load coupons to use into their phones and then redeem them from the mobile device at the merchant point of sale.
–Proz provides three services: a referral center FindProz.com to aid in finding clientele; management solutions through MyProz.com to provide accounting, scheduling; and communication management tools, and community pages.
–VuTherapy introduces patients to therapists via an online marketplace and allows therapists to manage their practice through a simple patient management service.
