Release dates are always a best-case-scenario game. If a publisher pins a game's release with the perennially employed vagary of “when it's done,” you can count your lucky stars that everyone involved is still of the prognosis that the title in question is still expected to get done. So it's refreshing to hear a publisher – Electronic Arts, no less – employ, if not exactly a worst-case-scenario, at least a grudgingly realistic one for upcoming Star Wars MMO The Old Republic.

Having slipped from “Spring 2011” to the more ambiguous “2011,” EA has now admitted the “outside possibility of a January launch.” The company's Frank Gibeau told CVG: “first, we don't want to tip off the competition; second, we want more data from the beta test to guarantee a spectacular experience at launch.” Previous OMG-it's-a-Star-Wars-MMO Galaxies, after all, suffered from the common criticism of being one of the most heavily patch-revised online titles on the market – 2003 being back in those naïve days when we expected games to ship after they were finished.
Are you holding out for Old Republic? Will you happily wait another month or two while they get it right?
