Whether you still use your Wii every day or see it an adequate dust collector, you must admit that the Virtual Console has been pretty crummy for a while now, with Mega Man X being the sole exception for the last six months at least. Nevertheless, one of the crown jewels of SNES software is at long last coming to the service, as Square Enix today confirmed what had long been rumored: Chrono Trigger is out on Virtual Console next Monday.
Chrono Trigger was ranked the third best game on our 100 best games of all time list (I pushed for it to be higher), and we really can’t say enough nice things about it. It’s arguably the pinnacle of JRPG design, its graphics are the finest of the 16-bit era, the soundtrack can’t be beat, it tells an incredibly complex story that, despite its twists and multiple settings, remains clear and immensely enjoyable. There is no reason you shouldn’t have played this at least once.
“OK, we get it, you like this game. Sheesh,” you say. Why won’t we shut up about it? Because not enough people bought it! The DS rerelease from a couple years ago is the definitive version of Chrono Trigger and too many ignored it, leading Square Enix to get cynical about the game’s popularity. In a recent-ish interview a Square Enix exec scoffed at its supposed admiration saying, “that’s not what the sales tell me.” Will sales on the Virtual Console prove him wrong? Almost certainly not, but at least it shows the publisher hasn’t completely given up hope on the franchise.
