Sony has contracted Taiwanese component manufacturers Foxconn and Pegatron Technology to begin work on components for the PlayStation 4 later this year, reports business technology site DigiTimes. The news comes from sources within both companies, which claim that the Taiwanese-based companies are tasked with assembling at least 20 million units with a target launch date scheduled for 2012.

According to the rumor, the parts requested by Sony include components for a Kinect-style motion control setup. However, this seems like a pretty safe guess to make if your info isn't really all that strong: last week, Sony's Andrew House told Eurogamer the company was focused on the PlayStation Vita and is “not looking at anything beyond that” for the time being. The rumor does corroborate an earlier report, which found “industry sources at a top developer” making the 2012 claim while free-roaming analysts refuted it. Who do you trust more – insiders who claim to know the facts but won't tell you their name, or analysts who want their informed speculation as widely-reported as possible?
