Epic shows off foliage system for Unreal Engine 3 (PC)

Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 is still capable of turning heads, as evidenced by this screenshot that shows what can be done with the engine's new foliage system. The image, tweeted by Epic PR manager Dana Cowley, looks amazing. Finally garden-gamers have something to get excited about besides Pikmin or Plants vs Zombies.

If there's one type of location games have consistently had a problem depicting, it's outdoor locations – particularly those with any kind of wilderness or plant life. Since “the outdoors” accounts for a far greater proportion of the universe than, say, “medieval castles” or “spaceships,” that means lots of blocky clumps of robot-grass and rigid, 2D bushes – and let's not even get started on the razor-sharp, clipping-filled messes of green polygons that are videogame trees.

However as Cowley clarifies, this pic is 100% real-time and in-engine, and looks to depict grass, shrubbery and trees – and even a solid-looking rock or three – without looking like a load of old ass. A huzzah to Epic – wonder how it looks in motion?
